Lola and Apollyon (determinant)[1]

Apollyon is one of the original Monarchs in Afterparty. She is the former Grand Judge of the Dead, and currently teaches empyrean law at the Nastrond School of Physical Suffering and Mental Anguish on Bobolyne Park. She is met by Milo and Lola during their quest for her Seal in order to convince Satan to let them out of Hell.

Personality[]

[TBC]

Official Description[]

"Once the Judge of the Dead, and Lucifer's little sister, Apollyon now does pro bono case work for spirits that need a public defender."[2]

Appearance[]

[TBC]

Background[]

Apollyon was born as an angel to God alongside her brothers and sisters, including Asmodeus, Beelzebub, Onoskelis, Sam Hill, and Satan. Apollyon was very close with all of her siblings when she was younger, and would go on to join Satan in the war against God and fight the Imperial Eagle in Heaven's Sixth Sphere.[3] After their loss, Apollyon was punished by being cast out into Hell alongside her siblings. At first, Apollyon lived on Welkin Way with her other siblings; however, they later moved out to their own locations with the exception of Satan.[4]

Even after the Fall and the death of Adam, Apollyon still believed in the "rules" set by God, and was allowed by Satan to become the Judge of the Dead. After her assistant judge, Yama, moved to Mexico after turning himself into a dog, Apollyon lost the enthusiasm she once had for her job; while she still works on cases at times, she now teaches empyrean law at Nastrond while spending most of her free time at the Sealed Knot. She is described by Sam as "one of the more respected angels in Hell, probably. Not that that would matter to her."

Due to Satan's increasing addiction to Hellcohol affecting his relationships and work, Apollyon began plotting an intervention with the help of her siblings and denizens of Hell who were close to Satan, including Forneus and Ordog. She had a leading human interventionist, Roberto Spaghetti, framed and sent to Hell in order to aid in helping him. Due to her secrecy regarding this plan, some began to suspect she was arranging a coup to overthrow Satan as the leader of Hell.

Plot[]

Monarch Seal Glowing - Apollyon

Apollyon's glowing seal.

After receiving the quest from Satan to retrieve a Seal from two of the Monarchs, Milo and Lola must visit both Apollyon and Asmodeus in either order for their Seals. While driving towards Little Rantalia, Sam provides some backstory on Apollyon's background in law.

Once Milo and Lola have disguised themselves in Lutzelfrau's coat, Apollyon is first met at the Sealed Knot, having drinks and scrolling through her phone with her associates Andy, Gerald, and Delbert. Lola can choose to try to speak with Apollyon, causing her to flatly ask "Do I know you." After Gerard leaves to order more drinks, Wormhorn appears and pressures Lola into providing a false name. If she does, Apollyon will ask them a question depending on whether they believe she is Lutzelfrau, Major General Scuttlebutt, or Abraxus Purson. Afterwards, Apollyon tells the others to prepare for the upcoming trial in the Courtyard before leaving.

After optionally staying with Andy and Delbert and learning of Apollyon's potential plan to overtake Satan, Milo and Lola must follow Apollyon into the back room, where she sits in a chair with a meowing man dancing in a suspended cage. Apollyon dematerializes Milo and Lola's costume; if Lola tried to speak with her earlier, Apollyon will recall Lola's subsequent lie if she provided one. If they listened to Andy speak about Apollyon's potential coup earlier, she will order them to stay silent about it. Afterwards, Apollyon assigns them to Roberto Spaghetti's defense team alongside Andy and tells them to ensure he receives a guilty verdict. After initially teleporting them to the wrong place, Apollyon apologizes before sending them to the Courtroom.

Following Roberto's trial, Milo and Lola are told by two demons to meet Apollyon at the Schoolyard Strangler. There, Apollyon expresses either approval for their success or disappointment over Roberto's acquittal before taking them upstairs to compete against her in a stacking drinking contest in front of a crowd. Regardless of whether they win or lose, Apollyon will grant them her Seal due to recognizing how important it is to them. Before she leaves, Lola can ask Apollyon how they died, to which she reveals that they both died in a car crash on Oak Grove.

Apollyon is one of the potential options that Milo and Lola can choose for their two teammates in the drinking contest, alongside Sam Hill, Wormhorn, Asmodeus, Lynda Landon, Fela, and the Drunk Idiot Demon. If they invite her, Apollyon texts that she was already heading there and might be able to help despite making no promises.

If Apollyon isn't on their team, she is the first to teleport into Satan's house during his talk with Milo and Lola, followed by a crowd of supporters; if she is, Forneus will teleport in her place after waiting for Polly to text him the signal. If Roberto is present, he guides the crowd through the start of the intervention; if he isn't, Apollyon starts with recounting her memories with Satan instead. Satan decides to ignore her and start the drinking game in spite of her presence; if she was chosen as a teammate, Apollyon will refuse to participate.

After the first round is complete and Satan collapses, Apollyon removes all the drinks at the party and demands that Satan listen to her; however, he teleports away to the Abyss instead. After the game is over, Satan teleports them back to his home, where Apollyon is calling someone on the phone about Satan before noticing and yelling at him for leaving.

(Accepted and won the game)
If Milo and Lola won the game, Satan drunkenly celebrates their victory as Apollyon blames Milo and Lola for enabling him in disbelief; if she was chosen as one of their teammates, she is sent to Earth with them, where she appears and speaks in the epilogue three months later.

(Forfeited and lost the game)
If Milo and Lola purposefully forfeited the game in favor of helping Satan, Apollyon reveals that they'd converted Sam's abandoned church into a facility, and Satan agrees to stay the night; three months later, Apollyon will visit either Milo or Lola's new job celebration at Feisty's.

(Accepted and lost the game)
If Milo and Lola accepted and ended up losing the game, Satan will express disappointment over their loss to Apollyon before heading to bed; three months later, Apollyon will visit either Milo or Lola's new job celebration at Feisty's.

Relationships[]

  • Satan - [TBC]
  • Beelzebub - [TBC]
  • Andy - [TBC]
  • Chernabog - Despite his loyalty to Satan and previous enabling of his Hellcoholism, Chernabog decides to stop after Apollyon declares the party to be over and describes her as "like [his] aunt".

Quotes[]

""Lying... is an accursed vice. It is only our words that bind us together and make us human." That's Montaigne, about a dozen years before he died of tongue paralysis... Everyone says God is a humorist, but what they really mean is... he's a sadist. It's sometimes easy to confuse the two."
— Apollyon to a disguised Milo and Lola.
"You were trying to do the right thing-- is that why you let Roberto go to Heaven? To meet God? And to be... disappointed?"
— Apollyon to Lola if they chose to acquit Roberto.
Apollyon: "You have sewers and sanitation now. And... Sure, artificial intelligence will eventually eclipse and enslave all of humanity but, until then... You can get toilet paper online, so. The point is people have always drunk to excess-- drunk to compete in excess. And in the morning, enwrapped in their hangover, they feel wiser for it, as you would after surviving a storm. The thing of it is, they've only survived the day. And you can't dodge the bill collector forever."
Lola: "You drink, though, right, Polly? We saw you at the-- at the Sealed Knot?"
Apollyon: "Of course, Lola. But there's having fun to have fun and then there's having fun to not be sad. The difference is in what's waiting for you in your empty apartment when you get home."
— Apollyon and Lola (if Lola says "You drink, though, right?")
"Okay, kids. Look to the mad prophet: "We want to hold fast to our senses and to our faith in them-- and think their consequences through to the end." Think about... the consequences of tonight. Before you go and do something to make your Mothers turn their heads."
— Apollyon to Milo and Lola before leaving.
"We're supposed to, um-- we're supposed to go over our memories-- say what we remember-- tell us how you've made us all feel. Not to be judgmental, not be... confrontational. And it's hard-- this is hard, standing here, um-- harder than I thought it would be. (...) You know what I remember? I remember playing tag with you... across the Hadean. I remember unicellular life, popping like popcorn... you and I, watching it-- Hiding from Michael in zircon crystals-- (...) And I remember you getting loaded off the divine fruit after it had been rotted. And I remember watching you change-- watching you hate Dad, watching you learn how to hate-- (...) This is your fucking intervention, Morningstar, and you're going to listen to every single thing we have to say."
— Apollyon to Satan.
"Morningstar, Hell can be... it can be a place for reflection, for rehabilitation, for skepticism, for study. But you've turned your back on everyone and everything, it's-- it's not fair to Beelzebub... (...) Or-- or Sam... (...) Or me. We're your brothers and sisters, Luke. We care about you--"
— Apollyon to Satan during the final confrontation. (if Sam is a teammate)
Apollyon: "Do you remember March of last year? I had a ten million year birthday party. And you ended up so drunk you burned down half of Gruntilda Lane? (...) I have more and better memories from when we were ten seconds old than of any time after-- Because any time after would have to include your Goddamn vanity."
Chernabog: "Oh, I didn't realize your Dad was invited--"
Apollyon: "Yeah I'm talking like Dad, cause Dad is a giant fucking asshole but he's also usually right."
— Apollyon to Satan (if Apollyon is a teammate)
Apollyon: "I-- I-- I don't-- I don't even know what to fucking say anymore, Satan, I-- I really-- really don't. Congrats, kids, thanks for-- for enabling the leader of the damn world-- into being a complete raging alcoholic who's drunkenly shat himself more than he's had hot meals."
Milo: "Polly, we-- we needed to get out, okay? We don't-- we don't deserve to be here."
Apollyon: "Maybe you deserve it more than you realize."
— Apollyon and Milo (if they won and Milo chose "We needed to get out.")
