Salathiel Machidiel, also known as Samantha and Sam Hill, is a major character in Afterparty. She is a psychopomp who assists Lola and Milo on their travels around Hell.

Official Description[]

"Sam Hill serves her time in Hell as a psychopomp, someone who ferries wayward souls in her souped-up cab. She becomes a sort of friend and ally to Milo and Lola, helping them find what she thinks is the best path on their journey."[1]

Appearance[]

Sam is a demon with glowing, yellow eyes and a stocky build. She wears a white button-up shirt under a brown, ripped leather jacket decorated with studs, shoulder spikes, and chains hanging from each shoulder to her collar; a black belt with a silver buckle; tan pants burnt up to the knees; and black sandals; as well as a black cap.

Sam was born as an angel to God alongside her brothers and sisters, including Apollyon, Asmodeus, Beelzebub, Onoskelis, and Satan. When Satan began to rebel against God, Sam stayed on the sidelines in fear, not wanting to fight against her siblings nor disturb the status quo. Afterwards, God would cast Sam out into Hell alongside her siblings for her "uncertainty in His order" and what he called her "ambivalence."

In the first month after the Fall, Sam decided to build a church at Odds Bodikins in order to have a place where souls could still intone with God; however, Satan destroyed the church three days in and assigned Sam the job of psychopomp, which she would remain in up until the present day.[2] Though her ferry initially used to cost money, the service was eventually made free once "someone upstairs finally realized [they] don't really have an economy down here."[3]

  • Sam's concept was done by Claire Chen, while her model was created by Eric Romano. A turnaround of her model with animations done by Ruel Pascual can be found here.
  • Sam's taxi was designed by artist Beverly Chen.[4]
  • Sam appears to have a habit of rambling to fill the space, as she will do so if Milo and Lola are idling around as she waits for them in places such as by her taxi, before entering the Schoolyard Strangler, and at Odds Bodikins.
