— Longinus and Hadrian upon meeting Milo and Lola. (determinant)

The Chanters are a musical trio consisting of three humans named Longinus, Hadrian, and Athalos. They are met by Lola and Milo should they choose to pursue Lynda Landon over Fela for an invite to Satan's house party on Welkin Way, and are one of the two potential musical acts that can be chose to replace Lynda, the other being Blackhouse.

Personality[]

Athalos is an indecisive person, unable to choose when faced with situations such as picking a song, choosing a laundry detergent, and deciding on a restaurant. Longinus is a fairly blunt person and tends to be sarcastic; he puts up the most resistance towards the idea of performing for Ono, even more so if Lola had kicked their tuner into the river earlier. Hadrian appears to be the most level-headed member of the group.

The three enjoy singing Gregorian chants; however, Athalos is often flat, causing them to require a tuner to perform properly. Partially due to them being from a distant time period, the chanters often inadvertently use outdated and offensive language towards others; though at least five people had passed them by after Hadrian dropped their tuner, they all "actively made [their] circumstances worse," implied to be due to Longinus' descriptions of them as "the dwarf, the Siamese twins, the ashen-faced fellow, the harlot, [and] the floozy."[1]

Appearance[]

Hadrian is a light-skinned man with a brown beard and hair; Longinus is a dark-skinned man with no hair; and Athalos is an olive-skinned man with blonde hair. The chanters wear matching long, olive-colored robes with a white, pinecone-shaped emblem displayed on the neck area, and are all trapped in individual wooden pillories.

Plot[]

If Milo and Lola decide to pursue Lynda Landon, they will pass by the chanters being guarded by a demon on their way to the Durdy Hurdy Gurdy, where Hadrian calls out to Milo and Lola as "the ebony woman and the lemon man." After a short exchange, the chanters reveal that Hadrian had dropped their tuner, and Lola can choose to return the tuner to them, kick the tuner into a nearby river, or pass them by completely.

After being told to recruit an act to replace Lynda for the night, Milo and Lola can (or, if they failed to recruit Blackhouse, must) convince the chanters to perform. Though they initially have reservations, the chanters will eventually agree to come in order to get more exposure, as the shutdown of a nearby taco hut has reduced foot traffic in the area.

At the music venue, Onoskelis teleports the chanters onto the stage and decides to have Valac and either Milo or Lola perform a dance routine alongside the chanters in order to get a picture of how the performance will look like. After they eventually succeed and Longinus asks how their performance was, Ono drops the chanters through the floor and concedes that their performance was better than she expected, agreeing to let them perform in Lynda's stead for the night.

Much later on, after completing Asmodeus' quest, the chanters text Lola to let her know their gig has finished, to which Lola can either reply positively or negatively:

"Hi Lola! We three monks just wanted to let you know that we just finished our set at the Durdy Hurdy. It was a thrilling experience, truly! Thanks again!"

Relationships[]

  • Milo and Lola - The chanters initially earn Milo and Lola's contempt after they refer to them by offensive terms while trying to get their aid. Lola can choose to either help the chanters by retrieving their tuner (giving her option of advising them to watch their language before leaving) or kick the tuner into a nearby river. Afterwards, Milo and Lola can return to the chanters to seek a replacement for Lynda; if the tuner was kicked away earlier, the chanters act cold towards them, and Lola has the option to apologize while trying to convince them to accept. After their audition and performance that night, the chanters thank Lola via text for giving them the opportunity to perform.

Quotes[]

Longinus: "Someone will surely come along and aid us in our-- our time of need!"
Athalos: "And don't call me Shirley."
Longinus: "Come again?"
Athalos: "Shirley. The name. It's a-- a bit of a reversal on how you just used the word."
Longinus: "No it isn't. That makes no sense."
Athalos: "Well I-- I'm just trying to lighten the mood!"

Milo: "Hey, this might not mean much to you, but this would really, really help us out. I mean, you're Gregorian chanters, right? Catholic? It'd be a good deed..."
